Step by Step Latching On - 7 quick steps Clare Boyle BSc, RM - Step 1: Position the baby correctly; tummy to tummy, nipple to nose.
- Step 2: Support your breast in C hold.
- Step 3: Stroke the baby’s mouth with your nipple.
- Step 4: Wait for the baby to open his/her mouth in a wide O.
- Step 5: Bring baby to the breast; Rapid arm movement (RAM!)
- Step 6: Wait a few seconds to see if nipple is in the mouth. There should be little or no pain/discomfort
- Step 7: Look to see if lips are folded out, lower lip especially. Check that there are no sucking/slapping noises made with lips, that the cheeks are full and rounded and the chin is tucked into breast if so - great! Baby is latched on. If not take baby off and start again.
